This lesson uses KA-SAT and telecommunications campaigns to show how shared infrastructure supports intelligence and warfighting while complicating effects and attribution.
Follow the end-to-end mission path
A satellite or mobile service includes user equipment, identity and provisioning, radio access, spectrum, gateways, terrestrial backhaul, carrier core, cloud control, operations support, vendors, timing, power, and physical sites. Mission communication also depends on endpoints, keys, applications, trained users, and procedures. Map the complete path and alternate modes.
The KA-SAT case connects a cyber operation with an invasion and cross-border civilian outage. Salt Typhoon shows telecommunications infrastructure as an intelligence platform; the 2025 multinational advisory describes persistent access to major network devices and trusted connections. These cases demonstrate that communications can be target, route, sensor, and dependency at once.
Cross-domain integration requires precise timing. A temporary communication effect may matter during maneuver, but physical destruction of a gateway may remove cyber observation or recovery. Electronic warfare can deny radio while revealing alternate behavior. Deconflict intelligence, cyber, space, EW, fires, and public communication around the mission effect.
Design degraded communications before conflict
Identify priority users and minimum information exchange. Build alternate carriers, bands, routes, providers, applications, and manual procedures while avoiding hidden common dependencies. Protect management planes and edge devices; use out-of-band administration, strong identity, current software, configuration baselines, and deep network visibility.
Exercise loss, corruption, latency, and compromised confidentiality—not only total outage. Train users to authenticate orders through alternate means and recognize manipulated messages. Pre-arrange vendor, government, and allied coordination. Measure time to detect path change, shift mode, distribute keys, restore capacity, and inform affected civilians or partners.
Resilience changes adversary calculus. If denial produces rapid rerouting while exposing hostile access, its value declines. If defenders depend on one cloud identity or terrestrial backhaul beneath “redundant” links, apparent diversity may fail at once.
