Reason About Licensing, Roles, and Responsibility
Choose defensible controls when licensing, role separation, and governance ownership constrain the solution.
In this lesson, you will learn to:
- Analyze and resolve a realistic scenario involving reason about licensing, roles, and responsibility.
Reason About Licensing, Roles, and Responsibility
This applied lesson develops exam and operational judgment for reason about licensing, roles, and responsibility.
Feature-level licensing changes the coverage claim
Do not reduce licensing questions to “E3 or E5.” Identify the exact feature, users who benefit, administrators, workload, and required add-on or service plan. E3 can provide a meaningful core; E5-level rights extend automation, endpoints, Teams, advanced analytics, investigations, records, and qualifying AI scenarios. Microsoft 365 Copilot is separately licensed.
If a policy targets a mixed population, calculate coverage from entitled users and healthy prerequisites. A tenant owning some E5 licenses does not prove every targeted user is licensed. An exam answer that names the denominator and a representative test account is stronger than one that trusts the portal state.
Review the current Purview licensing and E3/E5 guide before the exam because entitlements can change.
Roles express authority, not just access to a menu
Distinguish business approval from technical administration, sensitive-content review, investigation, and independent assurance. A data owner approves label meaning; Security may engineer DLP; Records Management owns schedules; Legal authorizes holds; service owners operate platforms; auditors test evidence.
Least privilege matters because Purview can expose messages, files, prompts, employee activity, and investigation material. Prefer answers that separate duties, justify access, audit reviewers, and define escalation. Avoid making Global Administrator the universal solution.
For every scenario, ask who owns the decision, who can implement it, who may inspect content, who approves exceptions, and who verifies effectiveness.
